Wilhelm v. Lieres holds a diploma degree in Physics from the Technical University Munich.

Wilhelm v. Lieres joined Siemens AG's patent department in 1971. From 1985 to 1988 he was in charge of Siemens' U.S.-based patent department. Subsequently, he took over the IP division covering Siemens AG's activities in the components area. In 1996, Wilhelm v. Lieres became head of Siemens AG's IP department and was appointed Corporate Chief IP Counsel in 2000. In 2004 he retired from Siemens and moved into private practice.

In line with his extensive experience in all managerial and professional aspects of handling patents in a challenging environment, Wilhelm v. Lieres focuses on advising corporations and research organizations on how to create and leverage IP assets, in particular patents. This includes
  • aligning patent activities with other business goals and strategies,
  • designing and establishing processes, structures and instruments for managing larger patent portfolios under Return-on-Investment criteria,
  • improving the quality and efficiency of patent operations.


Wilhelm v. Lieres served in leading functions in various IP-related associations and is currently member of the Board of the German Patent Bar Association.

He is admitted to the Bar of German Patent Attorneys and registered to practice before the Office for Harmonization for the Internal Market.
